Scale Factor Calculator

Use this calculator to calculate scaling between two objects that look the same but have different measures. Considering the dimensions of an object, this toolworks to find by what factor one figure is larger or smaller than the other. Beyond calculating the scaling factor, it allows you to determine the scale length and real length of an object.

What is the Scale Factor?

“A scale factor is the relationship (ratio) between the measurements of corresponding sides of similar shapes. It quantifies the change in size when a shape is scaled”

A shape will increase in size when scaled by a factor greater than 1. Whereas, the original shapes are termed preimages when we are talking about scaled shapes. Diagram 'A' has been enlarged by scale factor 2 to give diagram 'B'

How to Find a Scale Factor?

To find a scale factor, first find the dimension of the new shape (Scale Size) and then divide it by the dimension of the real shape (Real Size). In this way, you can determine how many times smaller or larger a new shape is as compared to the real one.

Scale Factor = Scale Size Real Size

From this equation, we can also find the scale size and real size by having the other two values. This scale factor calculator offers three options to solve what you're missing. Simply enter the known values and let it perform the remaining calculation.

Example # 1:

What would be the real length of the object with a scale length of 64 cm and a scale factor of 5 1 in inches?

Solution (Step by Step):

The given value indicates that the new shape is 5 times larger than the original. So we can write it as:

Scale factor = 5 1inches = 5/1 inches

Scale length = 64 cm

We need the actual length in inches to find the real length. So, convert it into inches:

Scale length = 24.4 inches

Now performing scale conversion from the scale to real measurements as follows:

Real Length = (d1/d2) * Scale Length

= (5/1) * 24.4 inches

= 122 inches

Example # 2:

If the original object is 15 inches and the scaled version (the new shape) is 5 inches, then the scale factor would be:

Scale Factor = Original size New size

Scale Factor = 15 inches 5 inches

Scale factor = 3

The result indicates that the new shape is 3 times smaller than the original.

Who Can Use Our Scale Factor Calculator?

Our scale factor calculator is a tool that can be utilized in various situations that need measurements based on a scale including:

Architects & Engineers:

Convert engineering drawings or building dimensions into scaled measurements to know how wide a wall will be based on the blueprints or models.

Graphic Designers:

It ensures the exact scale factor to determine proper alignments within layouts for enlargement or reduction.

Crafters & Hobbyists:

This tool works to find a scale for your creation based on the aircraft's size.

Educators& Students:

The use of this calculator helps to explore how the variation in scale factor affects the shape's size.

Map Readers& Hikers:

It helps you understand the connection between the distance shown on a map and the real distance you will walk on your hike.

FAQs:

What are scale factors used for?

A scale factor is the value used to create a smaller or larger version of a given shape. It only resizes the figures without changing the dimensions of a shape.

What is the scale 1 to 100?

The scale of 10:100 indicates that there are 10 units on a model that shows 1000 units.

What is the scale factor of 4 and 6?

  • Real Length = 6
  • Scale Length = 4

Put the values into the formula and get the scale factor:

Scale Factor = 4 / 6 = 1:1.5
